Fun fact: Lake Lure served as one of the two filming locations for the iconic 1980s movie, Dirty Dancing—and for the past ten years, the Lake Lure community has been celebrating its role in the film!

Over the last decade, the Dirty Dancing Festival has grown to bring in tons of visitors to the banks of the lake for a two-day celebration. Curious about the details? Find out more, and plan your visit!

The Details

The party kicks off in Lake Lure at 5pm on Friday, September 13th, where there will be festivities until 11pm. Things pick right back up on Saturday, with a full day of happenings from 9am until 5:30pm!

Not only can you expect showings of the movie, but there will also be some themed competitions, local food and drink vendors, and an artisan village—and plenty of the goods will be Dirty Dancing themed! Since the festival is celebrating its tenth year, the organizers are bringing in some special guests to honor the late star of the film, Patrick Swayze.

The Happenings

The first event on the agenda is the Hot Lake Lure Nights, which will feature dance lessons in everything from the Mambo to the Waltz, live music and entertainment, and vendors. Free public admission for the movie screening starts at 8pm that night!

The next day, the good times keep rolling, starting with live music and dance performances at 9:30am. Throughout the day, you can expect tons of other festivities, including more dance lessons, watermelon races, and themed contests. Our favorite has to be the Lake Lift competition, where couples recreate the famous final lift (in the water, of course, for added safety).

The Swayze Foundation

Founded by Patrick’s brother, Don, the Swayze Foundation was created in Patrick’s honor and works to help kids and special adults who are financially limited, but have a passion for pursuing anything from dance to animal therapies.

The foundation aims to give back in a number of ways, including offering arts scholarships to students, donating supplies to medical institutions, and providing financial aid to families in need. The Dirty Dancing Festival is a proud supporter of the cause!
