As the weather starts to warm up, you might already be counting down the days to your summer vacation. If you’re trying to decide on the perfect destination, The Foothills have something for everyone! Here are some of our favorite spots in the area—just let us know when you’re ready to book your rental.
Picture yourself traveling back in time and enjoying an easygoing lifestyle. When you vacation to Saluda, you’ll experience the best of mountain town living…without all the crowds.
This hidden gem of a community is filled with some amazing attractions, as well as plenty of shopping, dining, and recreational opportunities. Although Saluda’s population is just over 700, locals always have plenty of recommendations for things to do. They’ll probably suggest heading to Pearson’s Falls to take in the mountain scenery, strolling through the historic downtown, or exploring the Saluda Historic Depot and Museum.
Tucked just between Asheville and Black Mountain, Lake Lure enjoys a prime location that makes it a favorite for vacationers who want to be in the middle of it all. Although Lake Lure is close to some of the area’s best attractions, the real fun lies in the heart of this thriving mountain community.
Unsurprisingly, visitors to Lake Lure are eager to boat, fish, kayak, and swim near its shores. This one-of-a-kind destination is ideal for outdoor lovers, but there’s even more to discover. The Dirty Dancing Festival, the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge, and Chimney Rock State Park are just a few of Lake Lure’s star attractions.
Nestled at the base of Tryon Peak in the Southeast Appalachians, Tryon is a charming small town with plenty to offer. The area’s thriving arts scene and proximity to outdoor recreation will keep you entertained throughout your entire visit. And if you’re ever in need of bigger city fun, Asheville is less than an hour by car.
Not sure where you should start exploring? Tryon is a wine lover’s paradise—Mountain Brook and Overmountain Vineyards are two of the best spots in town, and they even offer tours. If you’d rather spend some time in nature, the Norman Wilder Forest, Melrose Falls, and the Blue Wall Preserve are just a short drive away.
Rutherfordton is a tight-knit community just north of Highway 74…and it’s also a fantastic spot to vacation! In fact, visitors enjoy mild temperatures all year round thanks to Rutherfordton’s location on the “Thermal Belt” of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
If you’re planning a trip to Rutherfordton, there are a few destinations that you have to see. The Bechtler House is a landmark to the North Carolina gold trade, and tours are available Monday through Thursday. If you’re curious about the area’s arts and culture, be sure to explore the Rutherford County Visual Arts Center Gallery, too. Ready for some outside fun? You can’t go wrong when you visit the Purple Martin Greenway Trail or Orchard Park.
